The gate at 12, Rua da Saudade, reveals the date of 1843 that I do not know what it refers to.
The first Cascais Misericórdia (Holy House of Mercy) Hospital was founded around 1560 and was aimed at the poor and unprotected in society.
In order to improve on the scarce income and rationalize expenses, another Hospital (for the Mariners and Fishermen) was merged to this Holy House of Mercy of Cascais in 1587jan28 by King Philip I, who removed it from the Confraternity of Our Lady of Socorro (in the building next to the current Town Hall building).
Later, in 1592, the Santa Casa built two new buildings at Rua da Saudade (here) and transferred the hospital to this Misericórdia property. The two buildings, connected by a porch, were the men's hospital and the women's hospital.
It was only in 1891 that the Holy House of Mercy asked permission from Town Hall to buid an extension from the nearest fountain to supply the Hospital with water. The works were carried out at the expense of the Santa Casa, but the water would be supplied free of charge. This work was very important to ensure the asepsis of the Hospital which, at this time, was already an assumed concern. So far the water was carried by a servant of the Hospital.
Already after the regicide of his father, in 1908out31, king D. Manuel II visited the Hospital of the Holy House of Mercy of Cascais and was, at the time, invited to the position of honorary caretaker, which he promptly accepted. D. Manuel II gave the Hospital relevant funds for his administration.
The electrification of the hospital occurred in 1921abr03 with the costs paid by the Sporting Club of Cascais (Parada Club).
This hospital remained in operation until the construction of the meantime replaced Conde Castro Guimarães Hospital in 1941.
