★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Avante! Festival is the 3-day festival organized by the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) (Avante! is the name of the newspaper, and means 'forward'). The festival usually occurs during the first weekend of September. As the saying goes, there is no festival like this one. You find stands from party organizations from all over the country, with typical food and wine, local crafts, as well as the International Solidarity space with stands from dozens of progressive powers from around the world. There are ten music stages playing everything from Rock to Fado, a theater stage, a movie hall, a giant book and music store. And naturally, also space for political debate and exhibits. Unique among the festivals, you find people of all generations in fun, struggle and solidarity.
