Douro cruises coming in and out. Obviously a popular stop-off. A buzzing hoard of hat sellers pounce on incoming tourists. Take a hat with you! Difficult to see where to buy tickets. A one hour tour can be bought at the quay and if you go to the top of the steps another couple of tour companies have kiosks. Best to research online first.

Quick transfer from train to river cruise. Only diversion near the docks except one small friendly bar with great coffee. A guy selling hats made in China wins prize for market penetration-almost everyone boarding the boat realized the necessity of covering one's head for the cruise to Porto on the Douro

The ride up the river is gorgeous, but if you're also going to book a school of kids ages 3-12 ,about 50 of them, you really should notify other passengers buying tickets so they have the option of going at a different day. nothing like tons of screaming kids running up and down all over the boat taking seats, running over the food Service staff, unable to do their job. and we were so fortunate to have table number 35 , right by the door, and got to listen to the door from the dining room to the outside slam at least 800 times.. oh and one little boy about 3 years old had chickenpox that's very nice touch. Winery tour and tasting was a disaster compared to real tours. It may have been because it was the end of the day after a 9-hour boat ride, we essentially got a five-minute tour up to The vineyards and description of the grounds, then taken back to The tasting room and given one choice to sample. And then told to hurry up and get out because they were closed. Scenery was beautiful, but they didnt have a hand in that, LOL.

For those doing cruises on the Douro River, im my opinion, this is the best quay to stop. It is an interesting small city. And has a very nice place to drink or grab a bite right on the pier. The Museum of Douro is quite good. In the summer the festivities fill the streets with people and fun.

Busy but nice small town on the banks of the Douro river.

Probably the highlight of my trip to Spain and Portugal; the magnificent cruise from Regua to Pinhao in an old fashioned river boat, with lunch!

Douro is one of the best places to see before you die. If you can, come with Barca Douro and you have the time of your life with Zero problems.
