Ms Elisa and Her Sweeping Driving Skills Well, when we mentioned our plans of a stopover in Pombal to the receptionist at our Lisbon hotel he said he’d never heard about this place before. But there is no question about it that this town locatedhalf way between the Portuguese capital and Porto in the country’s north is worth a visit. We loved the castle (Castilio de Pombal) and enjoyed visiting two museums: Municipal Marquis de Pombal Museum and the city’s Museum of Popular Art. Both of them are simply unique! We had booked a room at Hotel Cardal in the very heart of the city. Nevertheless, it was not easy to find the hotel entrance and drop-off zone since there were no signs to follow. But after we finally made it lovely Front Desk staff Ms Elisa greeted us with a big smile and in fluent English. They had prepared one of their recently renovated spacy rooms for us: convenient king-size bed, a flatscreen TV, WiFi for fast internet access - and a greened balcony that looks over the Square to the Town Hall that you’d rather take for a splendid church or palace… Our room had everything we needed including a state-of-the-art bathroom with fancy shower equipment and a bidet. The buffet breakfast in the hotel restaurant on the 5th floor is adjacent to a wonderful roof garden that invites guests to enjoy their breakfast or dinner under the open sky depending on the weather, of course. Cardal Hotel has clean and tidy underground parking garage for guest use but watch out! Since the garage driveway is extremely steep you should be a brave driver to use it. If you are not you may want to ask for assistance at the Front Desk - with their sweeping driving skills, at least Ms Elisa is a true professional and will gladly assist you. Absolutely amazing experience. Car broke down, so I came in at 2:00, exhausted, without a reservation, with issues with my rental company, with a broken bottle of ginjinha covering my bag. It could have easily been the worst night and worst day of the month. But everyone was so kind, helping me find my room, clean up the mess I unintentionally made, and helped me sort out my issues with the car rental company. I could not have asked for more helpful or friendly service, and I expected far less. They were everything I could hope for in hospitality service staff, and amazingly kind and good people to boot.
