★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great view on a vast land. The castle is not well kept giving it a rustic and undiscovered vibe. In May/June you get flower blossoms inside the castle grounds, great for a quick stop over

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It's an impressive Medieval Castle built over 900 years ago. Its outer walls are still standing but unfortunately the insides are in ruins. You get some impressive views from the walls of the Castle over looking the town.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We made a spontaneous stop at this castle when we saw it on a hill from the road. It’s a bit tricky to get up to—lots of very narrow roads—but the google directions were accurate.
It’s a stunning view up there of the surrounding area and the ruined castle is a sight in and of itself. Not a lot of placards or information to be found, but you feel a part of history here. Orange, olive, and lemon trees scattered around and we had it all to ourselves. I recommend this spot!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The castle can be seen for miles around, which is quite lucky as reaching it by car is a nightmare. The streets are narrow, made narrower by steps jutting out and lots are one way. We gave up and dumped the car on the outskirts and walked to the castle which we could see through the gaps in the houses.
The castle is free to enter and has a very good museum onsite, giving a good history of the district and the castle itself, enmeshed in regional family politics. You can walk a circuit of the walls but other than that there isn't much to it. There's almost nothing inside the curtain wall and the main tower is closed to the public.
Worth 30 minutes of your time. Shame there's no cafe on site though.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Portel could do much more with their Castle. The inner ruins can still be restored and give birth to a more lively space. Nevertheless, the Castle is well preserved and it's main tower fully restored. I recommend a visit to this small Portuguese gem.
