The Fontinha Quinhentista Fountain, was built in 1556 in the village of Alter do Chão, by D. Teodósio Duque de Bragança. Presenting a Mannerist model with an erudite decorative program, it develops in quadrangular planimetry formed by a porch of three Corinthian columns on which the entablature is supported, whose frieze is decorated by reliefs of grotesque motifs. The ensemble is topped off by two domes of rectangular soffit and spherical extraction. All elevations were decorated with volutes. On the back of the fountain were engraved two medallions decorated with laces and two winged heads that frame the coat of arms of the Village of Alter do Chão and the arms of Braganças. The date of execution of the fountain, "FATCUS 1556", was inscribed on these. The spouts and the tank do not belong to the original set, having been executed in the middle of the 17th century when the fountain was removed from Largo da Fontinha, the original site for the place where it is currently located.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Only the porch, columns and back wall belong to the original fountain that sat elsewhere in the town. Facing the marble piece one can see, on the backrest, the coats of arms of the Dukes of Bragança (on the left) and of Alter do Chão (on the right).
