The Basilica of the Sacred Heart (in French, basilique du Sacré-Cœur) is a temple of the Roman Catholic Church in Paris, and is also the symbol of the district of Monte Martre. The basilica is located at the top of mount Martre, the highest point in the city. The Basilica of the Sacred Heart was built with travertine marble extracted from the Seine-et-Marne region, which gives it a white hue.
One of the most visited monuments in France, the basilica is shaped like a Greek cross adorned by four domes, including the central dome eighty meters high. At the apse, a tower serves as a belfry for a bell that is three meters in diameter and over 26 tons.
The architecture of the basilica is inspired by Roman and Byzantine architecture and influenced other religious buildings of the 20th century.
