★ ★ ★ ★ ★ El monumento en honor de los soldados portugueses fallecidos en la Primera Guerra Mundial es obra del escultor João Silva. Fue inaugurado en 1933 y representa la victoria de los aliados, personalizada en la figura femenina que levanta una corona funeraria que remata la columna.
Portugal participó en la Gran Guerra con los aliados, entrando en el conflicto en 1916. En 1917 envió un Cuerpo Expedicionario a los campos de Flandes, si bien la mayoría de bajas portuguesas tuvieron lugar en las colonias africanas, pues tanto Angola –en su frontera sur– como Mozambique –en la norte– limitaban con colonias alemanas –Namibia y Tanzania respectivamente–.
The monument in honor of the Portuguese soldiers who died in the First World War is the work of the sculptor João Silva. It was inaugurated in 1933 and represents the victory of the allies, personalized in the female figure that raises a funeral wreath that tops the column.
Portugal participated in the Great War with the allies, entering the conflict in 1916. In 1917 he sent an Expeditionary Corps to the Flanders camps, although the majority of Portuguese casualties took place in the African colonies, as both Angola -in its border South - like Mozambique - in the north - was bordered by German colonies - Namibia and Tanzania respectively.
