Passando ao largo da discussão estéril sobre se o Brasil foi descoberto, achado, encontrado ou visitado, Cabral deixou-se levar pelos ventos e foi acostar os sítio que hoje se chama Porto Seguro. Tornou-se malquisto do rei e exilou-se para SANTARÉM na esperança frustre de um dia voltar a ser chamado a Lisboa. Morreu anónimo naquela cidade este beirão de Belmonte, e de mau feitio, e os seus restos foram trasladados com os da esposa para a Igreja da Graça, sita na praça com o seu nome onde foi erigida esta estátua. Pedro é retratado na estátua com uma espada e um crucifixo, as ferramentas com que as elites portuguesas amaciaram os dois povos, os de lá e os de cá.
 “Pedro Álvares Cabral, discoverer of Brazil”.
