Situada numa curva na rua Barbosa du Bocage (nacional 375) muito próximo do palácio de Monserrate encontra-se a fonte da Mata Alva, que chama a atenção de qualquer um que por ali passe.
A fonte foi erguida em 1875 por Francis Cook, 1º Visconde de Monserrate, e dono do Palácio vizinho do mesmo nome, ‘para o bem público’ como indicado em latim no topo do edifício
Actualmente restaurada pela câmara municipal em 1988 adquiriu um aspecto diferente devido essencialmente aos painéis de azulejos incrustados no alçado e muros que a compõem
O painel central é constituído por 96 azulejos onde predominam o branco, o azul, amarelo e com menos incidência do verde e do castanho. É uma reconstituição de um tapete de maçarocas do séc. XVIII.
Este alçado é ainda composto por duas aberturas de forma oval que permitem a entrada dos raios solares provenientes da vertente superior da serra dando-lhe assim um ar de luminosidade e calor conjugado com a água fresca que jorra da fonte.

Located on a bend in Barbosa du Bocage street (375 national) very close to the palace of Monserrate is the Mata Alva fountain, which catches the attention of anyone who passes by.
The fountain was erected in 1875 by Francis Cook, 1st Viscount of Monserrate, and owner of the neighboring Palace of the same name, 'for the public good' as indicated in Latin at the top of the building.
Currently restored by the city council in 1988, it has acquired a different appearance due essentially to the tile panels inlaid on the elevation and walls that make it up.
The central panel consists of 96 tiles in which white, blue and yellow predominate and with less incidence of green and brown. It is a reconstitution of a 16th century cob carpet. XVIII.
This elevation is also made up of two oval-shaped openings that allow the entry of the sun's rays from the upper side of the mountain, thus giving it an air of luminosity and warmth in conjunction with the fresh water that flows from the fountain.
