Guerra Junqueiro (1850/1923). Nasceu Freixo de Espada à Cinta, numa família de lavradores, tradicionalistas e muito religiosa. Frequentou Teologia e direito em Coimbra. Começou a publicar poesia ao 16 anos, quando estudante de Teologia, manifestando sensibilidade religiosa e preocupações sociais em composições ao gosto ultrarromântico. Ainda estudante evidencia inclinações políticas. Colabora ainda n’A Folha, de João Penha. Afirmou-se com A morte de D. João (1874), composição épica que obteve grande êxito, impressionando pelo fôlego declamatório, pela veemência da sátira, pelo lirismo exacerbado, pela acumulação de imagens e comparações. No seu tempo Junqueiro apaixonou e dividiu o público, devido sobretudo ao estilo panfletário e à sátira que marcam parte significativa da sua obra. Guerra Junqueiro (1850/1923). Freixo de Espada à Cinta was born in a family of farmers, traditionalists and very religious. He attended theology and law in Coimbra. He began to publish poetry at the age of 16, as a theology student, expressing religious sensitivity and social concerns in compositions to the ultra-romantic taste. Still a student, he shows political inclinations. He also collaborates in A Folha, by João Penha. It was affirmed with The Death of D. João (1874), an epic composition that was very successful, impressing with its breathtaking speech, the vehemence of the satire, the exaggerated lyricism, the accumulation of images and comparisons. In his time Junqueiro fell in love and divided the public, mainly due to the pamphlet style and satire that mark a significant part of his work.
