The hospital is located in the center of Lisbon, in the old Campo do Curral, currently Campo de Sant'Ana. The main hospital building is the result of several transformations that the old Santo António dos Capuchos Convent inaugurated in 1579 and delivered to the Fathers Recoletos of the Custody of St. Anthony. This convent, which was partially destroyed by the earthquake of 1755, has undergone several transformations throughout the centuries. In 1836, the queen D. Maria II founded in its facilities the Asylum of Mendicidade of Lisbon. The space occupied by the Asylum was increased by the construction of several pavilions and by the purchase in 1854 of the Palace of the Counts of Murça, dating from the seventeenth century.
