A paróquia de São Paio de Ruilhe era abadia da apresentação dos Sousas, senhores de Gouveia do Tâmega, ou do padroado real. Nas “Memórias Paroquiais de 1758” é referida a existência de uma irmandade, a saber, Irmandade de Santa Luzia e o pároco é abade da apresentação do Conde do Redondo. É paróquia do concelho e da diocese de Braga.
