The Santa Maria de Almacave Church is a humble religious building that is located in the upper area of the city of Lamego, in the north of Portugal. This modest Romanesque temple dating from the 12th century has been declared a National Monument. The Romanesque portal, with three archivolts and a checkered band, the side doors and the lintels, remains from the primitive foundation. Its interior was profoundly altered in the 18th century and enriched with tiles and gilt carving on the altars. An important historical event occurred here, since between 1142 and 1144, after independence from Spain, the King of Portugal convened the first courts there, with the nobles and the clergy of Portugal.
