About Jerónimos Monastery
The Jerónimos Monastery (Hieronymite Monastery) was declared a National Monument in 1907 and in 1983 UNESCO classified it as a "World Heritage Site".
King Manuel I had the idea of erecting a large monastery close to the site where Henry the Navigator had built a church dedicated to Santa Maria de Belém in the 15th century. With a view to perpetuating the memory of Henry and acknowledging his own great devotion to Our Lady and St. Jerome, Manuel I chose to establish the Monastery of Santa Maria de Belém on a site just outside Lisbon on the banks of the River Tagus. The monastery was given to the Order of St. Jerome, which is why it was given the name of Jerónimos (or Hieronymite) Monastery.
The Monastery is a cultural reference point that has attracted artists, chroniclers and travellers in the course of its five centuries of existence. It received, and became a burial place, for kings, and later poets. Today it is admired by one and all, not only as a remarkable piece of architecture but also as integral part of Portuguese culture and identity.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Late Gothic style (Manueline) architecture, showcasing impressive stonework, especially in the inner courtyard. The materials were simple, but the lasting craftsmanship was ornate and engaging. We're glad we popped in for a tour when we came to this end of Lisbon. Note: as with most places in Lisbon, it's worth getting your tickets online to avoid the longer lines.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The monastery is beautiful and huge, and includes the (free) chapel, cloisters (€10 adults), and two museums (Maritime, Archaeology).
Specifically for the cloisters portion, you can view in 20-30 minutes so perhaps slightly overpriced though architecturally it is beautiful.
Note the tickets are purchased near the entrance to archaeology museum and the lines can get long.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Must visit place in Lisbon. Beautifully crafted stone and wood details! Stunning archers and galleries on 2nd floor. Recommend to buy €10.00 ticket to visit the court yard, trust me it's worth it. Church (1st floor) itself is free to visit. Magical place, have never seen anything like it.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Mosteiro dos Jeronimos is one the most beautiful architectural buildings I have ever been. It’s squared design with big open galleries allows the entrance of sunlight in a truly magnificent way. In the middle, a lovely squared garden with a fountain in the center. Make sure to bring you camera, this place can provide some magical pictures.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Some amazing architecture. Definitely one of the big ticket items in Lisbon in a town generally short on big ticket items. If you're here, don't miss it. The adjacent church is free and has a separate entrance.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Wonderful monastery that enchants you with its beauty and history.
You can visit it in two ways.
1st with a daily card that is for all means of public transport (but only part of the monastery is free) you buy there of course a ticket to enter the museum and the inside beyond the temple.
The second way is to buy a card that includes admission to some museums and is at the same time a ticket for public transport.
My opinion is to get the Lisboa card even one day has a lot to see around the area that is worth the money.
the monastery is one of them!
Don't forget only part of the monastery is free

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It’s a gorgeous building with pretty good access. The signs were all in English but there weren’t that many signs. I would have liked a little more information about the history and uses of the monastery over the centuries. An audio guide might would have helped. Well worth a visit to see the gothic architecture.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ If you have Lisboa card, you don’t have to wait in the line for ticket office. You can go to the entrance directly. It was splendid building and the inside garden was beautiful. The stand glass are so colorful and shining very beautifully. This is one of the most wonderful place you should come with Lisboa card when you come to Lisbon. Worth visiting and highly recommended!
