At Leça do Balio, in Matosinhos, the Leça do Balio monastery stands as an original example of fortified religious architecture from the 10th century. The fortress church from the Gothic period is built of granite and the spare interior has harmonious proportions. Notice the pillars: they show scenes from the Bible. You can see the tomb of the bailiff Frei Cristóvão de Cernache, topped with a painted praying statue from the 16th century. Is an impressive landmark in Portuguese Caminho de Santiago.

Monastery of Leca do Balio existed already in X century as Benedictine mixed Convent for nuns and brothers. Its rights were confirmed by self-styled Queen Teresa of Portugal and then by her son first real King of Portugal Afonso - Henriques in XII century but by that time Monastery already belonged to knights of the Order of the Hospital of Saint John the Baptist of Jerusalem or Hospitallers. Knight Hospitaller Feranao Vasquez Pimentel reconstructed Monastery in beginning of XIV century and today's monastery is the product of his job accomplished mostly by 1337. Leca do Balio, Porto, ?? It's a really beautiful church, outside and inside. Worth a visit! Surroundings are all green and there's a kids park nearby, in the back. In summer there's usually a medieval fair with lots of entertainment, pretty fun.
