A barreira rochosa sobre a qual foi construída a ponte, é formada pela desagregação de um afloramento granítico que a ribeira atravessa e erosionou. Quando o caudal da ribeira sobe muito, a água não cabe por entre os blocos e forma uma "barragem" natural.
The so-called Ponte do Sume (because it is near this small and remote town of Crato).
The rocky barrier on which the bridge was built is formed by the breakdown of a granitic outcrop that the stream crosses and has eroded. When the stream flow rises a lot, the water does not fit between the blocks and forms a natural "dam".
