São altas as assentadas de quartzíticos dispostos quase verticalmente como se se tratassem de livros numa estante dai o seu nome.
 Livraria do Mondego is a natural monument that marks the landscape of the banks of the Mondego near Penacova. It is a monument that time has carved over more than 400 million years. The quartzite beds are high up, arranged almost vertically as if they were books on a shelf, hence its name.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The "Mondego Bookshelf" ("Livraria do Mondego" in Portuguese) is essentially various outcrops of sedimentary rock (sandstone) units from the Arenigian, an age of the Lower Ordovician epoch (between 478 and 472 million years ago). These outcrops, once horizontal when they were laid down at the bottom of an ancient sea, are now almost vertical, thrusted up by tectonic forces since. The river Mondego, which has it source in the Serra da Estrela massive, cuts these outcrops upstream of a nearby bridge.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful spot for a slow walk. The walkway, with a thrilling suspended section, allows a perfect view for a very enjoyable morning or afternoon walk. If you enjoy photography try doing it during early morning and maybe you get some fog as an added bonus.
