Tudo começou em 1969 com Detlev von Rosen que veio da Suécia para Portugal, para produzir hortícolas durante os meses de Inverno para os mercados do norte da Europa, onde estavam disponíveis apenas no Verão. O clima ameno da região do Algarve era ideal para tal.
Foi um sucesso, mas devido a dificuldades no transporte do produto para Londres, Hamburgo e Gotemburgo, mudou a produção para plantas ornamentais em 1972. Este era um mercado emergente e os produtos suportavam um tempo de transporte mais longo. A atividade prosperou ao longo dos anos, tornando-se num dos importantes viveiros de plantas ornamentais na Europa.
O olival veio mais tarde substituindo um laranjal como consequência de vários anos de seca. A oliveira que precisa de pouca rega, está presente no Algarve há milhares de anos, embora nos tempos modernos a tradição de fazer azeite na região estivesse quase perdida. Foi no ano 2000 que a empresa Monterosa se lançou neste desafio de produzir um Azeite de Quinta de alta qualidade no Algarve.

It’s an interesting tour around the estate and in the mill, with a a beautiful garden. The olive oil tasting was special too. It was the first time I’ve tasted olive oil in this way and Mariana explained everything beautifully. Thanks for a lovely visit to Monterosa

It is a bit far, a 30mins drive from Faro but worth visiting if you also love olive oil. My understanding and appreciation towards olive oil has greatly increased.

We were lucky to be there during the harvest season and were able to follow the whole process up close. The tasting was pleasant and the prices of the oil also seem very reasonable to me (especially because you know that it is all done organically and manually).
