The Museu do Lactário was established by the Fundação Aboim Sande Lemos (FASL) with the aim of disseminating the history of the pioneering institution that created the first Lactário in Portugal, in which quality milk was distributed, free of charge and daily, and also provided pediatric assistance to all the children assisted by her. The exposed estate discloses the history of the dairy service and support for children, as well as the development of its activity on the national and international scene, through material testimonies, with emphasis on the first incubators in the country. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, infant mortality rates in Portugal were quite high. To improve the living conditions of the children of Alfama, where a population with evident food shortages and poor housing conditions lived, Colonel Rodrigo António Aboim Ascensão (1859-1930), who commanded the Cavalry Company of the Fiscal Guard in this neighborhood, decided to create an institution. Thus, in 1901, an association dedicated to early childhood support was born and inspired by the French model of gouttes-de-lait (milk drops), developed by pediatrician Léon Dufour (1856-1928). It was an innovative model with an unprecedented offer in Portugal: distribution of quality controlled milk to children during the lactation period and pediatric support. Known as Lactário, it operated in facilities next to the Alfama district, in buildings designed by the architect Miguel Ventura Terra (1866-1919).

An absolute must to visit this museum if you are even just a little bit interested in the history of Lisbon and especially the Alfama district. Impressive documents from that time have been collected in the building where the "milk station" and a facility for premature babies were founded at the beginning of the 20th century. Until 2006 there was also a cowshed here, which is now used as a kindergarten. Thanks for the amazing tour Joana! PS Don't be put off by the fact that advance booking is required for a visit. Communication with the museum is extremely fast & very friendly.
