The Palácio das Necessidades was the only royal residence that withstood the 1775 earthquake, occupying the place where the old chapel of Nossa Senhora das Necessidades, built in 1607, stood. The chapel was built to house the image of Senhora da Saúde to which the sailors of the Indian career were devoted, having been enlarged and decorated with tiles in 1613.

Lovely peaceful and large garden. A great place to take food and drinks for a picnic. It is quite neglected but that is part of its charm. Takes an hour or so to appreciate properly
