We were actually looking for a different place that ended up being full so we decided to eat here instead. And we’re glad we did! I had the menu of the day for lunch with a delicious veggie abras (traditional cod and egg scramble) and an amazing dessert of fig sorbet with a meringue packed with almonds. My husband had the stewed veal cheek and grilled pumpkin salad. Even the bread basket was excellent.
It’s a kind of place that if they’re going to do something, they’re going to do it spectacularly. What made it different for me from other Portuguese restaurants is that on top of the usual delicious meat and fish dishes, they also find a way to make the vegetables sing, so it stands out from the typical mixed salads and boiled cabbages.
I was surprised the restaurant is rated only at 4.3 but maybe that’s because people typically expect lower prices. At the end I realize it’s more like casual fine dining at an excellent price. Hope more people appreciate it!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ One of the best restaurants I’ve been to in Portugal during my trip! This soup “peixe do rio e ovas” was so so good. It has fish eggs. I also loved the seasoning on the butter. The bread was fresh. The sweet potato chips was lovely. The cone starter was definitely my favorite! Great experience! Thank you and well done!

Very authentic menu with dishes from the region. Staff was quite friendly and helped translating the menu and explain the different dishes. Very reasonably priced for the quality and experience. Definitely 5 stars.

Every single dish is unique… I would like to try everything!!!!
And it’s amazing to visit this restaurant with a big company and try everybody’s dishes ??
And believe the chef ?? ! Tuna is delicious ? just really really gentle and amazing!
And desserts… omg… try everything! ?

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Situated in Santarém, less than an hour outside of Lisbon by car or train, @tabernaobalcao is another great example of the fantastic regional restaurants to be found in Portugal outside of Lisbon and Porto.
Sporting a great list of local Tejo wines, Chef and owner @castelorodrigo champions local ingredients not always seen in the cities, going out of his way to support local suppliers.
This is a restaurant that I would return to again and again to work my way through the menu. Outstanding

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Good food and very attentive service. The reason for my rating is that it felt a bit underwhelming being a Michelin starred restaurant, the food wasn't that flavourful.
The cheese plater was quite good but it is easy for a cheese plater to be good and we had an aubergine dish that was also delicious but way too expensive for half an aubergine (was something like 15 €! for half an aubergine!!).
Overall a nice experience but I was hoping for more flavours.
