“Quinta das Laranjeiras”. Sobreviveu ao terramoto de 1755 e à reconstrução da cidade; sobreviveu ao crescimento urbano, quando o centro histórico era tão distante; sobreviveu a quatro séculos de progresso. O imóvel andou de mão em mão, entre fidalgos, desde 1760, a referência mais antiga. A seu gosto, foram introduzindo estilos e traços arquitetónicos, para que, o que começou por ser uma casa rural, ganhasse o estatuto de residência palaciana. E, na viragem do século XIX, a habitação já se tinha adaptado à convivência social que promovia um certo estatuto burguês. Nem todos estimaram o património. Em boa hora, Maria Emília Viana Homem Machado, 3ª Condessa de Caria, o herdou. Com o seu marido, Boaventura Freire Corte-Real Mendes d’Almeida, zelaram pelo legado. Os antigos proprietários emprestam o título ao palácio, que, agora, renasce, perpetuando memórias.

“Farm of the Orange Trees”.
