About Pastelaria Benard

The death of Manuel José de Carvalho and Antonino Fernandes Dias – the partner who was his right-hand man –, together with the political turmoil and economic instability that followed the 25th of April 1974, led Pastelaria Benard to enter a period of difficulties, visible even in the degradation of space itself. At that time, the establishment did not have any production, with cakes and other products from the neighboring Marques coming from trays that covered, on Rua Garrett, the dozens of meters that separated the two stores.

In the early 1980s, the closure of Benard was believed to be imminent. Maria Augusta Montes, a long-established merchant in the vicinity of Chiado, however, was not satisfied with the idea of Lisbon losing its historic pastry shop, her favorite place. Against the opinion of his children and despite not knowing the field of activity, he decided to proceed with its purchase, which took place in 1983.

With the facilities renewed with a project that gave back to the space all the refinement and good taste of the past, recovered its own production and using only natural ingredients, Lisbon was able to continue to attend Benard.

The staff wasn’t very nice, the food wasn’t very good. My coffee was burnt and it was very expensive. Would not recommend

The salty croissant, they charge you 4 euros to sit at a table and if they don't have you standing up for breakfast. Not particularly pleasant treatment. I would not go back and I do not recommend it.

There is one guy here working like 30 tables so service is so super slow. Also they don't have time to clean the table cloths. Other than that the waiter is friendly and the sangria was good. We also got a chocolate croissant which was good. The location is great. We came here mainly so we could sit outside and people watch.

Staff is glad and proud to send away clients with Covid vaccine certificates from other countries (mine is from UK). If the country law is unreasonable, the least the staff should do is to show they are sorry, not that they think you are probably an anti-vac or some other thing that makes them feel on a superior moral ground. I'm editing this review to address the reply from the business, and addressing directly to them: Your agrument about fines and legislation was fully addressed in the original review: "the least the staff should do is to show they are sorry" and not do exactly the opposite. Your place is awashed in negative reviews about your staff's horrible attitude but you keep believing "there's nothing [you] can do" and that the customers are unfair with you. Don't you see you are condemning your business to innevitable failure? Customers can live perfectly well without your business but your business will not survive without customers. What else do you need to read to understand that things have to change in your house?

I’ve read 1 star reviews about the staff and that there’s sometimes only one working, it’s true but these it has been really hard to find people that actually wanna work, but sadly it’s been really hard finding those people, while all the staff members they have are super sweet and nice but you can ruin they’re mood if you are a Karen. So please I’m sorry if u had been waiting for a table or to get the staff at your service but please understand and respect that it’s the best they can do. Sometimes I’m even there to help. So thank you for reading.

Sadly, not that amazing. The tortilla was really good but not all the rest of the order. The capuccino was just white coffee. The croissants were dry, maybe because it was late afternoon. Anyways, no excuse, as this is one of the most traditional places to have tea in Lisbon. ?

We only stopped for a quick drink and Fernando was such a great server we stayed for more. He was funny and he had the spirt and energy of a Jack Russel Terrier. Please say hello to Boris for us ❤️We recommend this stop and will be back for sure.
