A SPAR foi fundada em 1932 por Adrian van Well, na Holanda, como DESPAR, que é o acrónimo do slogan “Door Eendrachtig Samenwerken Profiteren Allen Regelmatig” que significa “Todos beneficiarão de uma forte cooperação”.

Nascia assim uma cadeia cujo objectivo era assegurar a cooperação entre retalhistas e grossistas independentes, como resposta ao crescimento de cadeias de supermercados na Europa. Adrian van Well escolheu como símbolo para identificar a cadeia a árvore do abeto, que significa SPAR em holândes, e que se mantém até hoje o logótipo da empresa. O crescente sucesso da SPAR nos países onde está presente e o interesse demonstrado por novos países, é a prova da relevância do modelo de negócio da SPAR no retalho alimentar moderno.

As the only supermarket in town they should offer better service to locals and travellers alike. Upside is the large and covered parking and the attempted full range of supermarket services available.
