Our story

The Mill Ceramics is Mark McCarthy and Paul Miller – two Australians who made Portugal their home in 2015.

Paul and Mark started creating ceramics in 2017 for use in their café in Lisbon – the mill. It was always their goal to open the café using our own ceramics – taking advantage of Portugal’s rich history and experience in ceramics and fusing it with Paul’s modern Australian design ethos. Paul and Mark knew that having beautiful plates and bowls to serve their food was critical to the success of the café.

It took nearly 12 months to find the right local ceramics partner to make the collection by hand. Over the last four years we have been working to improve and perfect our collection so that all items are not only strong and durable, but they will delight our customers every time they use them.

It was never their intention to sell the ceramics, but when customers started asking to buy the plates that they eaten off Paul and Mark knew they had a product that people loved.

Our inspiration

Paul and Mark live and work by the Atlantic coast and the coastline was a big inspiration for the design – featuring strong, bright colours in different shades of blue.

Each piece in the collection is made by hand by Portuguese artisans in a small workshop in the north of Portugal and this guarantees that every piece is unique. The entire collection is microwave and dishwasher safe and is designed and built to last.
