★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very original and significant statues group. In the Socialist Realism style. At the exact place where women on days or nights of sea tempests, would come to watch their husbands' fishing boats come back to the harbour. They would sometimes watch the ship wrecks of their men' boats and desperatly cry that they might swim in the right direction to save their lives.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A sculpture by Brito (2005) was inspired by the painting by Matosinhos artist Gomes, of the “Tragedy of the Sea” on 2 December 1947, off the coast of Port Leixoes, when several fishing boats sank with the loss of 152 crew. The bronze sculpture captures the anguish of the widows and orphans from this maritime tragedy. It also reminded me of the perils of the sea, looking westward into the setting sun.
