As Velhas - R. da Conceição da Glória 21

4.5/5 based on 8 reviews

Roots

Old Ladies «As Velhas» coming from Minho province, settled at this place in 1925 to cook comfort food.

The clients were attended by waitresses who served stewed dishes and specialties from the north of the country, in long dining tables.

The neighborhood was a center of theaters, games and popular fairs, particularly in the near Parque Mayer, attracting the bohemians and revelers - people were living the Roaring Twenties!

As Velhas Restaurant continue today serving timeless recipes to the lovers of Portuguese cuisine, in honor of the Old Ladies.

My friends and I went to dinner last night at this lovely restaurant and I can not speak more highly of the food quality and warm service. We were a large group of 8 adults and 2 children. The starters were delicious served promptly and our wine glasses were never emptied. The mains which stood out the most were the coffee steak, cod, and melt in your mouth octopus! The children also had fresh soup made a few hours before dinner and amazingly fresh fish and fries and everyone was so kind to them especially the owner :) Also highly recommend the chocolate tart, absolutely delish! Thanks so much for a memorable dinner with all my friends!

What an amazing place! We are visiting from Alaska and the staff took excellent care of us! From start to finish, the meal was superb. We will certainly return when we come to Portugal again. This was one of our best meals this trip.

We ate at this restaurant tonight The food was memorable. Both the cod and the pork dish from Northern Portugal (pork rojoes) were excellent. It was all served by Antonio who was very friendly and energetic. We highly recommend this restaurant. Good choice of Portuguese wines.

I had a lovely experience at this restaurant with my family. The servers were very attentive and personal. They served us with care and even explained the history behind the dishes to us. This was very helpful to us coming from the United States. We ended the evening with a typical hard liquor called ginja which was a sip of Portugal in a glass. It is a sweet hard liquor with drunken cherries. A memorable experience at a good price.

One star for the Octopus. Kudos to the cook for his skills, this is not an easy feat. - 1 star: Getting in; the owner's first words were for the staff member and she asked him if we had a reservation. When confirmed we did not even get a welcome. Good start. - 1 star: Out of 5 dishes served on the menu, 2 were available (the "best ones" old excuse). We were told what to eat by a friendly staff member. All done in a quick and effective manner. Not a second spared. - 1 star: Bread 2euros / Olives 2euros / Butter 2euros. What we thought was just a little pre-starter snack wasn't so generous after all. - 1 star: When paying the bill the nice staff member just quickly imposed a 10% / 15% / 20% bill upgrade. A great magician trick. This is unfortunately not the traditional Portuguese restaurant we were expecting (it might have been way back then) but rather a good tourist trap nowadays. Food is ok (The Octopus was great and the Cod wasn't too bad). The atmosphere is not great. I guess it might have been better with "As Velhas" back then. Don't be fooled.

Amazing clams. Great ambience and service. Unfortunately they had run our of prawns so one star off for that given it wasn't late. Octopus also excellent. Didn't love the battered green beans - too much batter.

Antonio and Paulo were our waiters and they took Greta care of us! We came here because of several recommendations from friends and family, in particular from my uncle Paulo Lomba, and we are so happy we did! The food is amazing and the customer from Antonio and Paulo was the cherry on top of the sundae. They really know how to treat you like royalty. My mom said this is the best bacalhau she ever had and I enjoyed my ham and salad very much too!
