About Café Luso - Fado & Food Group

Café Luso, originally founded in 1927 at 31 Avenida da Liberdade, had as its first artistic director the distinguished guitarist known as Armandinho.

In 1939, it opened as a Fado House in the Brito Freire Palace, in Bairro Alto, an 18th century building. The original owner of this building was Francisco de Brito Freire, a Portuguese colonial gentleman and administrator.

In this 1930s, half walls of the same building, there was the atelier of the fabulous decorator and set designer Lucien Donat, also a lover of fado and bohemia who, together with João Villaret, Caeiro Churches and others (1942), created the first radio magazine.

In 1955 Café Luso experienced a highly mediatic moment, immortalized with the live recording of Amália Rodrigues.

It has 92 solid years of existence, establishing itself as one of the most renowned fado houses to present Fado, an effective school of artists who bear witness from generation to generation.

The person at the door was very kind, until I said I was alone.. “sorry we are full” was the short answer. Ok.. disrespectful if you ask me.. but hey if you don’t want my money, too bad for you ? Very pathetic.. never again

I arrived at the location and it was closed (Google listing for Adega Machado is wrong. Apparently forwarded to another restaurant which they don’t tell you. Beware!!). So I walked down the street and found this gem. I walked up to the doorman and asked him if there was a table available. He immediately arranged for a table for one along with the maître d'hôtel. (The show was just about to start). The food was excellent the service as well. And the show exceptional. 4 sets 3-4 songs each. The room is great acoustically. Overall a 5 star experience. Will definitely return on my next trip to Lisbon. (Caveat was that apparently Luso and Adega Machado are owned by the same company, but that is not the staffs fault)

But what I loved the most was the fado experience - the people singing managed to deliver the intention of the fado songs, it was overwhelming in the best way! Thank you a lot for such a great evening.
