★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La estatua de don Juan III que preside el Patio de las Escuelas de la universidad de Coímbra es obra del escultor Francisco Franco (1855-1955), uno de los artistas oficiales más destacados del régimen del dictador Oliveira Salazar. Obra de 1948, es buen ejemplo del «clasicismo austero» de Franco, quien en este caso se inspiró en los retratos de Enrique VIII de Inglaterra de Hans Holbein.
La escultura forma parte del programa desarrollado en la Alta de Coímbra comenzado en los años 40 del siglo XX y que supuso la completa destrucción de la zona para dedicarla a las instalaciones universitarias. En la remodelación se respetaron los edificios históricos que rodean el Patio, que recibe esta estatua en honor al monarca que, en 1537, fijó definitivamente en Coímbra la universidad portuguesa, hasta entonces compartida con Lisboa.
The statue of Don Juan III who presides over the Patio de las Escuelas of the Coimbra University is the work of the sculptor Francisco Franco (1855-1955), one of the most outstanding official artists of the regime of the dictator Oliveira Salazar. Work of 1948, is a good example of the "austere classicism" of Franco, who in this case was inspired by the portraits of Henry VIII of England by Hans Holbein.
The sculpture is part of the program developed in the Alta de Coimbra started in the 40s of the twentieth century and that involved the complete destruction of the area to dedicate it to university facilities. In the remodeling the historic buildings surrounding the Patio were respected, which receives this statue in honor of the monarch who, in 1537, definitively fixed in Coimbra the Portuguese university, until then shared with Lisbon.

King João III succeeded D. Manuel. He had 10 children and saw everyone die. His grandson D. Sebastião succeeded him. Among many other achievements, he was responsible for initiating the effective colonization of Brazil, dividing it into hereditary captaincies.
