The "Porta Férrea" is the heir to the most important entrance of the old medieval fortress of Coimbra, where the University was installed in 1544 by the grace of Don Juan III. At the end of the century, in 1597, the property of the castle was definitively ceded to the University by Philip I [II of Spain].
The current door was designed by Alfonso Tavares in 1633, adopting the university symbols. Its exterior facade is crowned by Wisdom and, under it, in a niche, Don Dinís, founder of the Portuguese university, flanked by the allegorical figures of the Laws (Civil Law) and Medicine, is represented.
In the interior façade, also under the Wisdom, Don Juan III -which definitively fixed the University in Coimbra- is represented with the figures of Theology and the Canons (Canon Law), thus completing the four faculties that at that time, principles of the XVII, conformed the University.
