It was built in 1230 as a result of the conquest of Elvas by King Sancho II. The building was built over the main Elvas mosque, which may have been built in the 8th century. The church underwent multiple transformations that were hiding the Arab vestiges which almost disappeared with time. Only a few remains of the niche-shaped minaret remain on the right side wall of the church, which faces Mecca.
Initially the royal patronage of the church was donated to the Order of Avis by the Portuguese king Don Dinis, the troubadour king. During the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the church underwent many renovations until it was as it can be seen today.

This church is created from the mosque where the mirhab, oriented towards Cordoba, can still be seen outside. Its interior has been profoundly modified, and in recent times a sacristy was created where the main altar was previously located, the church losing its depth.
As points of interest there is the tomb where Vasco da Gama's great-grandparents are buried. Still in the sacristy, there are two paintings by Luis de Morales, sadly mistreated. A feather!
Outside, you can see the Muslim cistern, which is of no special interest if it were not for the fact that, for any unidentified phenomenon, it was always full of water.

It was located inside the Arab walls and was initially a Mosque. The bishop of Évora ordered it to be purified after the establishment of the Christians in Elvas. In 1271 it was owned by the crown. King D. Dinis donated the space to the Military Order of Aviz. This church has undergone several renovations over the centuries. The most recent were in the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Too bad it's closed.
