The best suckling pig I've had. Reserve your portions as they sometimes run out.

I've had Leitao in many places, including in Mealhada (the Home of portuguese leitao) and Manjar do Norte is a Portal direct into it. The leitao experience is the best it can possibly be. A friendly environment, welcoming and professional staff, obviously the Leitao is straight out of the oven with golden and crunchy skin that crackles on the first bite, mildly seasoned as it should be and if you feel frisky you can drench it with more pepper sauce which is served on the side. Cannot recommend enough and I'm forever thankful I don't have to drive all the way up to Mealhada to have a worthy experience. I honestly shouldn't even be reviewing this as I'll probably have to wait more in line :P but they deserve all the fame and reputation as they can have.

Personally I love Leitão, it's a Portuguese speciality. A piglet is cooked whole in a large oven and served to the customer in pieces, bones and all. You will be asked how many "doses" your group needs. Unless you have a huge appetite, half a dose per person is more than enough. The skin makes lovely pork crackling and the meat is very soft and melts in the mouth. The dish comes with home made fried crisps, and they will provide a salad or rice cooked with grated carrot. A bottle of house wine will come from a local vineyard and be quite good. Just one caveat is that the Olives, bread, cheese etc brought to the table unrequested are not free... In fact they are quite expensive for what they are, but it's a common thing in Portuguese restaurants that the locals are used to. If you don't want it, just leave it and they won't be charged for, the waiter will only charge for what's been eaten or opened... And keep an eye on the bill... The Tally is kept with a piece of paper under the edge of the table cloth, the owners are very honest, but the restaurant is very busy and mistakes can be made which is why the paper is stapled to the back of the bill to encourage customers to verify and every item is identified clearly on the bill... This is the reason for the 4 star, because it could be improved... Go and enjoy a lovely meal... Just don't forget to call the day before to book as they are very popular and you are unlikely to get in if you just turn up.

Make sure to book in advance or come early, otherwise be prepared to queue. Food was good and service awesome, also available in English.
