★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A classified National Monument since 1977 – São Bento da Vitória Monastery is one of the most important religious buildings in town.
The first stone of the Noble Cloister was cast in 1608 but the work was only concluded in 1728. In 1808, during the Peninsular War, the monastery was converted into Military Hospital. In 1835, after the expulsion of the Religious Orders, it became a Military Court and Seclusion House as well as headquarters for the 31st Infantry and Engineering.
More recently, the monastery was subject to renovation, including a metallic acoustic shell with a delicate structure that brings value to the space without losing its soul.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We've had a mix of audio and live English guide. Audio was very limited and poor. But the live guide was very knowledgeable, passionate and with great sense of humour. It was an interesting experience and reflective space. Partly thanks to conversation around well-endowed mermaids on monks' benches.
