★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It's interesting to go and learn about the history of the place, if you care about such things.
Structure-wise there isn't all that much to see in the former monastery itself, as it's not very vast. Some very nice construction details inside though.
Before reaching the structure you will go through a mini museum with some interesting exhibits and history bits, in which we spent more time than in the monastery.
It's still one of the must-sees of Coimbra, so make sure to drop by.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It was the worst tourist experience ever in my life.As a single young woman who took all the way from Lisbon to Coimbra just to visit these sites.Yet, the staff working in the area (despite being a diverse university town) did not speak single word of English.How weird.Paying that much money for 10 minutes and the staff doesn’t inform you any further about what to do, where to go next and how to get help.And that Portuguese TOURIST GUIDE guy that I happened to encounter in that museum was extremely rude ( I was wondering if I could to get more information and guidance somehow, trust me I’ve seen a lot, travelled more than 25 countries + we have dollars and euro to get extra service.We are not somewhere near the beach our bikinis but rather in Coimbra wanting to see the old world Portugal! ).He was hired by some American tourists and that tourist guide happened to treat me as if I am doing something extremely characterless and somehow stealing his guidance services as I happened to
lend an ear wondering if I could get guidance next. He was extremely rude and tacky that and I was utterly speechless.All I wanted was to get help and service somehow.Overhearing him telling stuff about that museum and area for less than 2 minutes gave him the EGO boast and classless attitude to treat me like a thief.
Speechless...I realised that I will never ever recommend anyone to visit this area if they visit Portugal. Didn’t know being interested in culture and history gets you in trouble by tacky complex tourist guide.

In June is still closed to the public. We visited on the outside and is still worth it.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The expanse of space at Monteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha is a feast for the eyes. The structure of the 13th Century Monastery is impressive. When we entered through the parking lot, we were greeted by stone walls. We walked to the entrance and was greeted by the massive monastic structure. Entrance is €4 per person. The 15 minutes video on the life of the nuns is in Portuguese with English subtitles. There is a Cafe serving expresso or Americano coffee with some pastries with both internal and external seating options to admire the Monastery from a distance. At 41°C minus the humidity, we were not tempted to walk the length of the field to the Monastery. It was hot, really hot.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ As of 18th November the Monastery (and even the grounds next to it) are still closed. This is of course understandable since it is a research site.
What remains for visitors is an interesting 15 minute video (with English subtitles), but the archaeological displays, which is the only other main thing there, does not have English translations.
