Existe uma polémica que diverge quanto a verdadeira data da sua construção, à quem diga que é datada da época Romana, enquanto que para os habitantes é da época medieval. Pela sua arquitetura a ponte é romana, construida no tempo em que esse povo esteve na península Ibérica, para alguns historiadores e perante um estatuto que Silves tinha de que, como capital de um reino islâmico medieval, atribuíram a sua construção aos séculos X e XII. Wer dieses Städtchen besucht und sich für Geschichte interessiert, (Silves war die frühere maurische Hauptstadt) sollte sich dieses Bauwerk anschauen. Heute dient die Brücke nur noch den Fußgängern. Tem uma bela vista também para o Castelo de Silves o que não deixa de ser bastante curioso!
