We parked on a side street a little way away and walked up the hill to the castle, past the faded cathedral built on the site of the mosque. Entrance with the museum was about €7 and we walked out of the gates into the courtyard. The centre of the castle is now a mix of garden and archeological dig although the gardens are a bit neglected after the tourism decline due to Covid. We walked a full circuit of the walls and then had a drink in the cafe before looking at the gardens. One of the towers had an exhibition of castle photography which I obviously loved! The cisterns, in use as the towns water source until the 1990's, are now an exhibition of the decline of the Iberian Lynx and the work being done to protect and reintroduce it.

The castle has great views and interesting history. Lovely restaurant with the most amazing traditional orange cake, a must have.

Built on top of a hill, the imposing Silves Castle is Roman in origin, but it was the Arabs who built the magnificent castle we see today, between the 8th and 13th centuries. Built of Silves sandstone, the castle has the shape of an irregular polygon and a main gate flanked by two defensive towers, three turrets and seven sides. Visitors can walk around the patrol route. There are a number of remains from the period of Muslim occupation on the inside of the castle, in particular a silo which was used for storing cereals and a cistern covered by a vault seated on five semi-circular arches. Despite having been rebuilt in the 13th century after the city was taken from the Moors by D. Paio Peres Correia, Silves Castle is the best example of Arab military architecture in Portugal.

Very nice walk inside the old ramparts of the castle, with a great view on the city of Silves and it's surroundings! Inside the castle you can find a really nice snack with a lovely terrace. You also have temporary exhibitions in different towers, displaying the architectural heritage of the region

Silves castle and the Silves city are really great to come and see. There is nice view from the castle walls. And the city is old but very cute. You can just lost yourself there

Location, presentation etc. are stunning. Information about the history is less thrilling but it's all in Wikipedia. Parking is difficult, as is the walk up from the town if you have any mobility problems. Entrance is just a few Euros.
