The statue in the middle of the square is from Joaquim António de Aguiar, a politician from Coimbra who played a significant role in the process of secularization in Portugal in the 19th century.
The Square marks the beginning of the pedestrian street Ferreira Borges. A bustling downtown street, lined with attractions, shops, cafes and restaurants.
