El templo fue completamente renovado en el siglo XII en estilo románico, probablemente al tiempo que el claustro junto a él –del que se descubrió parte en la década de 1940– y fue consagrado hacia 1200.
La iglesia fue de nuevo reconstruida entre 1684 y 1704, cuando recibió su aspecto actual. Se le cambió entonces su orientación, dándosele acceso a la calle. Como el resto del palacio episcopal, en 1912 fue cedida al ayuntamiento de Coímbra, pasando así a ser parte del Museo Nacional Machado de Castro, albergando desde 1923 su sección de arte sacro.
Documented in 1083, the church of San Juan de la Almedina would then form part of the episcopal palace of Coimbra. The temple was completely renovated in the 12th century in Romanesque style, probably at the same time as the cloister next to it -which was discovered in the 1940s- and was consecrated around 1200.
The church was rebuilt again between 1684 and 1704, when it received its current appearance. His orientation was changed then, giving him access to the street. Like the rest of the episcopal palace, in 1912 it was ceded to the municipality of Coimbra, thus becoming part of the National Museum Machado de Castro, housing since 1923 its section of sacred art.
