K	Kate Morrison on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I sat here for dinner on my first solo trip to Lisbon. A waiter asked if his friend could sit with me and I was joined by the lovely Jorge. 92 year old, ex-boxer. We shared wine and food, he insisted on paying and completely stole my heart for a few hours. Food was lovely and the fado was so beautiful and moving. Would recommend.

The fado was absolutely incredible - Cristina and Lino are such wonderful singers and they were so happy to talk with guests between singing periods. The environment is cozy and tight, but by 9 o'clock the place is full, making for a wonderful, engaged atmosphere. The food is not cheap yet at the lower end of fado prices. You can come after dinner and just buy a drink and sit down. The quality of food is not terrible, not the best ever, but after a glass of (more than serviceable) house wine and a couple of rounds of fado, who cares! The experience is so worth it. Did not even make a reservation (early December weeknight). Highly, highly recommend.

Many people gave warnings about tourist traps in every place, so we decided to walk around a night before and talk to owners, meet the people and pick a place by the impressions. The owners of this place seemed honest and welcoming so we chosed this place and we were 100% right to do so. The food was good, not the best we had in portugal but we were more than satisfied. The fado experience was incredible, all the artists were great, you could see they put their heart and soul in their work and they were communicating and interacting with the audience throught the night. Some people in the reviews complained about the appertizers that were charged and not ordered, honestly we had no issues they offered them politely and we told them we don't need them and that was it. In the end, everybody left the restaurant, it was only us and another table and they kept playing and singing in an intimate and friendly atmosphere. As for the food, I would recommend the octopus, you just can't go wrong with it in Lisbon, the other dishes seemed nice also but why take a risk? Overall, I recommend Esquina to everyone who wants an romatic fado experience in Lisbon. :)

We preferred dining outside as inside is cramped and crowded. Service can be extremely slow at times, especially during the singing, so patience is required if you don’t get the timing right. Otherwise, great Alfama place.
