Our car was okay-ish but it would have been an obvious and nice gesture to inform us about the chaotic and strange β€športagensβ€˜ Motorway fee system in Portugal. If europcar had advised us to take a telepay reader in the car that would have saved us quite some hustle and fees. Not very thoughtful of them but next time weβ€˜ll know better… Hence only 2 stars for thoughtless customer service.

We picked the car up quickly at the Lisbon airport (although i would just appreciate getting the car I ordered, not a 15 min sales pitch for a more expensive car). Unfortunately upon getting to Porto we noticed the car was leaking a lot of oil and we didn't want to drive it. After a quick call to Europcar they had arranged for us to drop it off and pick up a new one at the Porto office. Although we lost two hours of our day the staff in Porto made the switch go very easy. I understand these things happen and they made the best of it.

1. We made a reservation that included loss damage waiver. When we got to the counter they said no, we don’t have it and it added 100+€ to our bill 2. The staff member asked us if we’d like a Mini instead (sounded like a free upgrade). Turns out this was for 100€ more. 3. When we returned the car, the staff member in the garage was incredibly rude to us. He snatched the key, through the booklet into the car and just waved us away. We paid a lot of money for the service, it would be nice to at least be treated with some kindness.

Despite reading so many unfavorable reviews, the rental process was effortless. We asked to get the car couple hours earlier than the original time, which was not possible, but we got it on time. The pickup took a few minutes as they finished cleaning the car and the car was exactly as advertised. No issues returning the car at the self-drop off in Sevilla train station.

Terrible service from start to finish: Car handoff happened without a walk-around, no help to install the kids seats, the car smelled like cigarettes, and at return they charged extra for cleaning for normal use. I definitely do not recommend this rental agency and I plan to never rent from them again.

Mixed feelings here. Europcar is a good agency generally, but when I was given the car keys, I had to do a walk-around and look for scratches and bumps myself, reporting back to staff, rather than the rental company doing it themselves prior to handing out a car to the customer. Isn't that weird? In the end it was all fine, but I was quite disappointed by this quality of service and doubt this procedure is normal. Plus, I couldn't get my rental car 20 minutes earlier than I had booked online because the agent couldn't access my file. Not a big deal, but that means if you arrive earlier than planned, no car.

We waited in line for 45 minutes to pick up the car then when we got to the desk the guy was intent on us upgrading even though we'd spent time on line chasing the right car and insurance to make this process quicker. He lied to us and told us our luggage would never fit in the boot (it did) and that we'll be pulled over and fined by the police.

Base on my experience renting a van with Europecar is I waited long enough. But the guy who was at the car collection point was very helpful he told me straight away that the van still being washed. Overall experience with Europecar is 7 out of 10.
