β β β β β A nightmare to deal with if you need to contact them from overseas.
I had a situation where my friend scratched the car, and my credit card has an accident coverage. We never received the rental agreement and I was charged an extra amount with no receipt whatsoever. However, despite many emails from both my friend and I, we were unable to get a response well over 20 days.
I ended up having to wake up at 4am in my time zone just to call them. Currently on hold on the customer service line. We will see if I get what I need from them, but I would not recommend renting from Avis in Portugal.

β β β β β I found it very difficult to understand the person who served me at the rental company and was very confused about the Tolls. We asked if we needed a transponder and was told only if we were driving to Porto . When we took the car back we were told it was damaged and was told we hadn't purchased a transponder.
We did not think that things were explained to us properly. The desk was so busy we had to line up for 45 mins before someone could serve us.
Not good customer service.

β β β β β If traveling from outside of the EU, BEWARE of an additional VAT which significantly increased the quoted price (23%). I was not a fan of the drop off process...one guy who took a long time looking over the cars then actually skipped over me to service the next customer (of course time is critical). No apology offered. The pickup process was good, the car was perfect.

β β β β β Everything was great with Avis in Portugal. However, when I decided to renew my contract online, the website was not user friendly and it became impossible for me to prolong the contract. I also tried to contact them by phone and no one answered! Also, everything was in portuguese.

β β β β β Bad service, they lied from the beginning not giving proper advice. We had to do the check-in ourselves. They charged us for the tank when giving it back full + car in poor condition (problem with direction that almost caused an accident on the highway) When we reported it, they answered we made a scratch, final bill for the scratch is more that 500β¬
When you check the license plate you can see that the car, was not in his first days . I do NOT recommend, go to any competitor they are much nicer and much better quality !!!

β β β β β They company changed me 300 Euros extra for a scratch that could have been polished away easily. I tried to dispute it. They also charged me for them messing out on revenue whilst the car is being repaired. ...lol like they would repair a tiny scratch. It's just a huge rip off. Do not book with them!

β β β β β Car was great and was seen to quickly getting in the car and on the road soon after landing. Am Avis Prefered member and this makes a difference when picking up cars speeds things up greatly, would recommend.
